The Fair Internship Initiative is a group of current and former United Nations interns and consultants advocating for higher quality and fairly remunerated internships within the United Nations System.
We believe that the UN can do more to align the working conditions of its youngest contributors to the values it stands for.
WHAT DO WE ADVOCATE FOR?
Basic rights to interns and full recognition of their work;
Establishment of a monthly stipend to cover basic living expenses;
Monitoring of the quality of internships across the United Nations System.
HOW DO WE DO THIS?
Communications – campaigns, social media and media outreach;
Outreach – meetings with Permanent Missions and the wider UN system to work towards paid internships of higher quality;
Research – collection and analysis of data on best (and worst) practices for internship programmes to support our advocacy.
